Keep Your Enemies Closer

Post  FlameDarkfire on Tue Nov 27, 2012 6:06 pm

The bass was pumping while laser lights danced around in the air. Skills that allowed him to blend in with any crowd helped him navigate the dancing and writhing bodies on the dance floor. Back in the Army he'd been known as a smooth operator, the kind of guy that could charm the burkha off a married woman. In broad daylight.

He could only smile at the boys trying to get by with "swag" as he made his way to the bar. Three numbers already and the night was still young. Dressed to kill in a black button-up shirt with the top two unbuttoned and jeans, along with a winning smile. "Hey bartend, I'll have a Captain and Coke, on the rocks please," he commented to bartender.

Nicole had been pre-gaming the bar on the way in. She knew the owner, Dino was in the VIP bubble. Literally. It was a giant damn bubble with a plexiglass door and a water feature. Cheesiest damn thing, but whatever. She was allowed in and 99% of the club was not and that's all that was important.

Tall shoes, short skirt, ready to go. She shot a coy wink to the bouncer who radioed one of his guys to personally escort to the Bubble. That's right, bitches. Suck it, everybody else...

"Hang on! I'm not going in thirsty!" She yelled over the thumping bass. She pointed over to the bar and mimed drinking, holding up a finger indicating he give her a minute. She waved him in closer, yelling near his ear, "Just let him know I'm here! I'll be right up! Thank you!" He nodded and fist bumped her before he turned for the Bubble.

Nicole bounced her way through the crowd to the bar. If Toro was working tonight, he'd hook her up right. Jackpot! He was.

She muscled her way up to the bar, trying desperately not to make eye contact with whatever guy was trying to get her attention. She locked eyes with Toro.

"Hey love! Lemme have a Divine Fire?"

"You got it, sweetness!"

She surveyed the scene quickly. I guess I could be practicing or whatever. The higher ups were giving her shit because she wasn't being "all she could be" or something. Wasn't that the army jingle from a while ago? When she was little?

Ooo. Speaking of Army... Down a ways. Unmistakeable crew cut. Beefy. Way too confident. Please don't be bridge and tunnel...

"Thanks buddy," Jack commented as the bartender slid him his drink. He got a text as he took a drink, from a buddy of his. "You at the club?"

"You know it," Jack replied.

"See anything you like?" He grinned as he looked up, spotting a sexy lady down the bar.

"Oh yeah Smile" Time to show those boys on the dance floor what game really looked like. He slipped up the bar to Nicole, smiling as he leaned against the bar next to her.

"Know what the worst part of being in Afghanistan was?" he opened, "All of the women there weren't half as beautiful as you are." His accent was Southern, though not deep. More like Northern Kentucky with a noticeable drawl, but the effect was by no means distracting.

Nicole laughed openly. "Woooow. A cowboy and a soldier?" She rolled her eyes, reaching for her drink. "My lucky day." Even in these sky-high heels, she was barely eye-level with him. He was cute, she give him that, but she was gonna play.

"Lead with that one often, Pardner? VA benefits extend only so far."

Jack playfull gripped his chest above his heart hearing her response. "Oh dear, you wound me! I wouldn't say that to just any lady you know. And you must have me mistaken for someone from Texas. There's cowboys there, sure, but Kentucky has all the studs. My name is Jack by the way, and you are?"

She laughed. "I am...thoroughly amused." Nah, she'd throw him a bone. Sort of. Like she was going to give her real name. "It's Sydney. Call me Syd." It was her experience giving a fake name a fake nickname usually sold it.

"So, Captain Jack Bluegrass, what brings you here to the big, bad city? Gonna make it big on Broadway?"

He chuckled before taking a sip of his drink. "Not really. When I was in the Army I saw all the worst places in the world, so I thought I'd go and see all the great places. Florence is particularly beautiful this time of year." He grinned to her, turning to lean his back on the bar.

"So what are you into, besides clubbing?" he asked.

"Eh, anything that catches my eye, really. Not so much 'trendy', per se, but like," she sucked in a cheek and tapped on the edge of her glass, looking for a word. "More exciting than something I already know." She screwed her face up. "That was way too much sharing for a club conversation. Sorry." She looked away for a second.

"So Florence. I was in Milan for a fashion show there, a while ago. I used to work as a buyer. Usually have to say that in case guys start thinking I'm trying to be a model. Like NYC isn't full of enough, right?"

He smiled and shrugged. "I won't hold it against you. People tend to open up to me." He took another pull of his rum and coke and looked out at the dancers briefly.

"Yeah, seems everyone is either big or trying to make int big in this city," he replied looking back at her. "Though you'd probably be a great model. Sorry to say I'm not much into fashion. I like to look good, but I don't keep up with that stuff. Florence though has so much history, Milan too if you look but I haven't been there. Part of why I was there was a bit of Anthropology, though that's a bit boring for club talk," he smiled with a wink.

She put a hand on his arm. This time, she didn't intend it as a flirting gesture. "No no, please. I love changes of pace. 'More exciting than things I already know,' remember?" Holy shit. A real conversation in a club? Tweet that later. She squared up to him, sitting on the stool.

"Tell me about Florence."

He smiled as she touched his arm, and finished off his drink.

"Well, Florence is a place where you feel like you've stepped back in time," he began, "Almost everything looks like it did in the 15th and 16th centuries. The architecture is quintessential Renaissance, in fact it is where Brunelleschi started constructing buildings in that fashion. You can see his style in many great basilicas, like Santa Maria del Fiore," he continued, pulling out his phone to show her pictures of the cathedral. "Very orderly yet at the same time visually beautiful to look at. It actually hearkens back to Roman styles, which while they weren't as visually ostentatious as Gothic architecture was still very beautiful..." He talked at length about the history of the city, particularly the Renaissance, and was earnest, but not pushy. It was clear history was a subject he enjoyed.

Wow, this guy liked to talk. Either he really was some sort of anthropologist or whatever, or this was the most intricate pick-up ever. This would be the time when Nicole would be nodding blankly at ever third word, then smile and laugh in regular intervals. But not this time.

"Well, I guess next time I fly out that way, I will make it a point to visit the....Santa Maria? del...Fiore?" She winced, hoping she got the name right. Even with the engaging conversation, the club made it almost impossible to concentrate, even in earnest.

She realized her glass was empty, sitting next to two more.

He laughed as realized he had gone on for a bit. "Ah, I'm sorry for talking your ear off. Yeah, that's close enough. It means Saint Mary of the Flower." He smiled as he took a sip of his second drink to refresh his parched throat. "I'm also sorry if you were meeting up with someone, they must be wondering where you are by now."

Nicole smiled tightly. "Yeah, actually I am a little late. Supposed to be in the Bubble," she nodded toward it. "Maybe some time, you can tell Dino about the architecture. He loves remodeling."

She pushed off her stool. "Check ya later, Captain Jack Bluegrass. Or uh-arrivederci."
